Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies offer the possibility of a tool-free production of components with extremely complex geometry which cannot be attained by any other shaping technique. In plastics industry AM methods are already commercialized to a large extend and the equipment for 3D printing can be bought for home applications. For ceramic parts AM requires a subsequent thermal and mechanical treatment of the manufactured parts for instance by debinding, sintering or machining steps. Furthermore, this material group requires a lot of special know-how and a highly experienced staff. For that reason, AM of ceramics is very far from home applications, but ceramic components are indispensable for consumer goods and medical devices and Additive Manufacturing opens new horizons for novel components in so-far “impossible” geometry made of ceramic.
Project goals
The cerAMfacturing project will develop a completely new approach for ceramic multi material additive manufacturing which will allow series production of customised and multifunctional components for manifold applications. In several case studies demonstrators for personalized medical products – micro surgical tools, implants, and remedies – will be manufactured starting with the patient specific physical dimensions and ending with components validated under practically relevant conditions.
